July 2026: What Does It Mean to Cultivate Character?

Over the past month, we explored what it might mean to find one’s craft. Along the way, it became clear that craft is about more than developing a skill or making something with our hands. Every time we return to a piece of writing, a woodworking project, a garden, a conversation, or any work that matters to us, we are being shaped by it as much as we are shaping it.

This month, I’d like to explore that idea more deeply.

Character is rarely formed in dramatic moments. More often, it grows quietly through ordinary choices: deciding whether to continue after disappointment, responding to frustration with patience, admitting when we’re wrong, standing by our values when they are tested, or learning to let go of outcomes we cannot control. These moments may seem small on their own, yet over time they become the foundation of who we are.

The prompts for July are not meant to offer answers. They are invitations to investigate. Some may lead to stories from your past, while others may ask you to examine the present or imagine the person you hope to become. You may find yourself writing about your work, your relationships, your successes, your failures, or the countless ordinary moments that quietly shape a life.

Whether your craft is writing, teaching, making, parenting, gardening, cooking, or simply learning how to live with greater intention, perhaps every meaningful pursuit asks the same question:

What kind of person is this work helping you become?

As always, there are no right answers. Bring your curiosity, your experiences, and your willingness to explore. I hope these prompts encourage you not only to reflect on the work you do, but also on the person you are becoming through it.
